Join Ash Center fellows Miles Rapoport and Tova Wang for a study group series examining various aspects of the burgeoning democracy reform movement sweeping through states across the country. The final session is entitled "Universal Civic Duty Voting, An Idea for the Future: A Conversation with E.J. Dionne."
Despite the hardships we are living through, there are two things about our elections that dealing with COVID-19 has taught us: we have a tremendous need for ownership and participation in decision-making, and that ideas previously off the table can and need to be discussed. E.J. Dionne, renowned journalist and now Harvard professor, is a proponent of making participation in elections a requirement of all citizens in American democracy. Australia (since 1924) and 25 other countries have this requirement - and far higher levels of participation. Is now a time for that discussion to begin here?
